There are many ways to approach and understand the numbers. One such important approach has to do with numbers and gender. From the get-go it’s important to say that when I use the word gender in the context of numerology, I’m referring to an energetic reality, more like the Yin and Yang, a sort of cosmic structure. This has nothing to do with being a man, a woman or one’s sexual orientation. It has to do with energetic functioning. Once you understand your core numbers from this angle, you’ll have a new way of understanding yourself and your life. I’m also proud to say that some of the knowledge in this article is inspired by the teachings and developments of my numerology teacher – Sharon Ron.
The Origin of Gender in Numerology
It is truly fascinating to feel into the numbers and get to know them intimately. Some are more controlling, others more receptive, some far more fluid then others, and some more universal in their approach to life. Most numerologists divide the numbers into two gender groups: masculine and feminine. The division is similar to the Astrological Zodiac where the 1st House Sign is masculine, the 2nd House Sign feminine, 3rd masculine, 4th feminine and so on. It’s unclear whether the origin of this methodology is rooted in astrology or based on Pythagoras’s approach to numbers that influenced the astrological division of house-signs into gender. However, upon a closer examination, this theory of masculine and feminine fails the test of actual reality. At least, that’s my observation.
According to this method, number 8 is a feminine number. Now if you know a thing or two about number 8, you certainly know it is everything but feminine! It’s one of the most masculine numbers you can get. When my numerology teacher trained me in numerology, he showed me a very different division of masculine and feminine based on real life experience. And after many years of being a numerologist myself, I agree with most of it. He even introduced an in-between mix of mascu-feminine to number 5. I personally call it the Androgynous number. Later on I introduced another “gender” one could say, that I call Universal. Let’s unpack this further.
Gender Number Categories
When I teach my numerology students, I focus on four gender categories: masculine, feminine, androgynous and universal.
Masculine includes: 1, 4, 7, 8
Feminine includes: 2, 3, 6
Androgynous includes: 5
Universal includes: 9
Masculine numbers are by and large more sharp, cutting, mental, controlling, individualistic, opinionated and not very impressionable.
Feminine numbers are softer, more emotion centered, yielding, receptive, compassionate, flexible and much more impressionable.
The androgynous 5 is interesting because it is the most malleable and flexible number of all. It sort of takes shape based on what it desires and can move in both directions. It can be both water and fire.
The universal 9 is very unique in that in a way “universal” is not a gender. And yet in the context of gender as a cosmic energetic construct it’s still a valid category and the way I teach it to my students. The universal 9 is a number of Soul and Transcendence. It can be masculine when it wants, feminine when it wants, even androgynous. But at all times at its core it transcends it all. I always refer to the 9 as a Soul number.
The 9 is really an exception in that it inherently includes all numbers. It’s literally mathematical. Just add: 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8 = 36 = 3+6 = 9
or
1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9 = 45 = 4+5 =9
Amazing isn’t it?
But the question is, how is all this information useful? What can you do with it numerologically? And how does it help you understand yourself?
What Does This Mean about You
Imagine you are a man and you take a look at your numerology chart and you see many 2’s and 6’s. According to our categories they are mostly feminine numbers. All your life you’ve tried to escape the fact that you are a kind, sensitive and emotional guy. You might have tried very hard to impress others by betraying your own nature. But now you can finally accept yourself, your authentic nature. How great is that! Or imagine you are a woman and all your life you were judged for being a tough one, a rebel or a tomboy. You sort of liked yourself that way, but over time started doubting whether something is wrong about you. You look at your chart and indeed you see many 8’s and 1’s – mostly masculine numbers.
Now that’s a huge relief! You can relax into your natural structure, into the unique woman that YOU are. And as a man, you can accept the lovely feminine presence that makes you even more beautiful!
But there’s more. It’s not all about our relationship with our gender. It is also about understanding and embodying our personality better. Your Life Path number may be more masculine and so it makes you a very driven person, but your Expression Number is more feminine which makes you express that drive in subtle and gentle ways. Or perhaps your Soul Urge is a universal 9? Maybe you constantly have grand visions that guide your path. And what about that androgynous 5 as your Personality Number that helps you charm everyone by being able to use your flexibility and speak to them in their own language?
That’s the magic of numbers and gender. You get to know yourself and confirm yourself on ever deeper, more refined levels. And after all, is that not the purpose of Numerology?
